Kids Martial Arts in Bergen County - Small Classes, Real Attention
Most parents searching for kids martial arts in Bergen County aren't looking for the biggest school. They're looking for a place where their child is actually seen.
Sidekick Martial Arts & Fitness is a kids-focused school in Hasbrouck Heights serving families across Bergen County. We run small classes for ages about 3.5 to 14 - Tiny Tigers through kids programs - with clear expectations, patient coaching, and no yelling.
If your child is energetic, anxious, or has ADHD, you already know what happens in a crowded room: they get overlooked, corrected in front of everyone, or told they're "not ready." That isn't discipline. That's the wrong fit.
Here, Master Joe teaches with structure and patience. Effort matters. Respect matters. Confidence is earned over time - not promised in a brochure.
Who this is for
This page is for Bergen County parents who want martial arts that fits their kid - not a production line.
Kids who have energy and need somewhere useful to put it
Kids who get anxious when a coach raises their voice
Kids with ADHD who do better with clear, patient instruction
Families who value small classes over packed mats
Parents in Hasbrouck Heights and nearby towns who want long-term community, not a short-term hustle
Ages: Tiny Tigers (about 3.5-5) and Kids Martial Arts (about 5-14).
You won't hear "black belt in a few months." You will hear: show up, try hard, listen, and grow.
Why Sidekick
Small classes mean attention for every child.
Big classes move fast. The kids who already know how to follow along do fine. The ones who need an extra beat get left behind. We keep groups small on purpose so Master Joe can coach your child - not just the front of the line.
Discipline without yelling.
Yelling creates fear. Fear is not the same as focus. We set clear rules, hold kids to them, and teach respect with firmness and patience. Parents tell us the same thing after the first week more than anything else: someone finally gets my kid.
Confidence that lasts.
Confidence here isn't a pep talk. It's the quiet kind that comes from learning a skill, failing, trying again, and being noticed when you improve. That takes time. We're built for the long term.
Master Joe's teaching.
You're not dropping your child into a rotation of assistants who barely know their name. You're bringing them to a school where the head instructor is on the mat, paying attention, and setting the tone.
A community, not a sales funnel.
We want families who stay. The offer is simple: try one free week, watch how your child is coached, and decide if it's a fit. If it is, we'll talk about next steps. If it isn't, we'll say so.

Common questions
Is Sidekick a good fit for kids with ADHD?
Many of our students are energetic, struggle to sit still, or have ADHD. We're not a clinic and we don't diagnose. We offer small classes, clear instructions, and patient coaching so those kids aren't lost in the back of a big line.
What if my child is anxious or shy?
We don't force kids through fear. We set expectations, give them space to try, and coach without yelling.
How small are the classes?
We keep classes intentionally small so every child gets attention. Ask when you book for current sizes - we'd rather be honest than inflate numbers.
Do you serve families outside Hasbrouck Heights?
Yes - Wood-Ridge, Lodi, Carlstadt, Moonachie, Teterboro, Little Ferry, Garfield, South Hackensack, Rutherford, East Rutherford, and broader Bergen County.
What's included in the free week?
A full week of age-appropriate classes - not a one-and-done trial class.
Will you promise a black belt quickly?
No. Rank takes work and time. We care more about character, focus, and steady progress.
